It is home to a wide variety of stores and eateries, as well as parks, a theatre, and the scenic lake. The World's Original Marmalade Awards are held annually at Dalemain, a nearby ancient mansion with gardens.

Troutbeck is a fantastic home base for exploring the stunning landscape of Ullswater, Glenridding, and Patterdale, and on to Ambleside and the southern end of the Lake District through the Kirkstone Pass.
