Western Lakes

Wastwater

Home to England’s highest mountain and deepest lake (Scafell Pike and Wastwater respectively), the Western Lakes is an area of great diversity and contrasts. Each valley has its own special characteristics, from the wildness of Wasdale to pastoral Eskdale, bucolic Buttermere valley verdant Ennerdale. The area offers some of the best walking country in Lakeland from spectacular high ridge routes to gentle rambles around lakes and tarns. Wastwater is perhaps the most awe-inspiring of all the lakes. It is England’s deepest lake and is simply stunning, surrounded by fells such as Red Pike, Kirk Fell, Great Gable and Scafell Pike. The road winding along the lakeshore to the head of the Wasdale Valley offers impressive views of the famous screes that drop dramatically to the water’s edge. Wasdale is the wildest of the valleys in the Lake District, Wordsworth described it as, ‘long, stern and desolate’. It has not lost any of its power to surprise, charm and thrill us today, so much so that in 2007 it was named as Britain’s favourite view in a television programme. Eskdale is one of few major valleys in the Lake District not to have its own lake, however this does not detract from its beauty. The valley penetrates deep into the heart of the Lake District. Far up, in remote and wild country, the River Esk rises by Esk Hause, a high crossroads of the fells before flowing down through a largely unspoilt valley to a coastal estuary at Ravenglass. Eskdale is famous for its narrow-gauge railway which offers a scenic journey from the coast to the upper reaches of the valley near the foot of Lakeland’s highest mountains. The beautiful Buttermere valley comprises a string of small lakes – Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater separated by flat, verdant meadows. The tiny village of Buttermere lies near the head of the valley, between Buttermere (the lake) and Crummock Water. The classic combination of lakes and mountains has made the village popular with visitors since the beginning of tourism in the Lake District. Ennerdale Water is the most westerly of the lakes, and the most remote, so it offers, even in high season, a place to escape. This secluded valley is only accessible on foot or by cycle, it is the only lake that does not have a road running alongside it, and remains one of the quietest and less explored parts of Lakeland. It is surrounded by the crags of Pillar, Steeple, Scoatfell, and Haycock on one side and High Stile and the Red Pike range on the other.
