Kirkby Lonsdale cottages

Kirkby Lonsdale cottagesIn Cumbria’s south-east corner on the banks of the River Lune where the counties of Cumbria, Yorkshire and Lancashire meet lies the picturesque market town of Kirkby Lonsdale. The town, located on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and within easy reach of the Lake District, is a pleasing mix of elegant 18th-century buildings and stone cottages huddled around cobbled courtyards and narrow alleyways. Surrounding the town is a rolling landscape of winding lanes and verdant green fields bordered by high hedges and dry-stone walls. Its attractive setting is epitomised by the glorious view up the Lune Valley from Ruskin’s View (pictured). The artist and poet John Ruskin visited the spot, just through the town’s churchyard, after viewing Turner’s now famous painting of it, and was enchanted, writing that, ‘I do not know in all my own country, still less in France or Italy, a place more naturally divine’.

Walking in the area

From your doorstep: Riverside walks along the Lune. A few miles away: Across Morecambe Bay, Yorkshire Three Peaks, Arnside Knott, The Howgills. Further afield: Far Eastern & Central Lakeland fells.
