Howgills & Dentdale

The Howgill Fells

The Howgills are one of England’s forgotten walking areas in. Separated from the Lake District by the Lune Valley, they lie mostly within the boundaries of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and offer fine views of the Lakeland fells and the Yorkshire Dales. The Howgills are a small group of distinctive bare, dome-shaped hills with steep sides. Unlike the Lakeland fells there are few crags and not many walls or fences. Many of the fells are connected by wide, grassy ridges with almost deserted deep valleys between. Sedbergh lies at the foot of the Howgill Fells at the northern end of Dentdale. The town, with its narrow cobbled streets, has an olde worlde atmosphere. Sedbergh is England’s book town. There are just three official Booktowns in Britain, Hay-on-Wye in Wales and Wigtown in South West Scotland being the others. The village of Dent sits somewhat detached from the rest of the world. Administratively part of Cumbria but historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Dent is a small village at the heart of Dentdale, a hidden gem of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Dentdale is just 14 miles long and lies to the north of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, west of Wensleydale and to the south of the Howgill Fells. Dent is the only village in Dentdale, with its delightful cobbled streets. At the heart of the village is the old Sun Inn, formerly owned by the Dent Brewery that is located a few miles to the east in Cowgill. Just beyond Cowgill is Dent Station, nearly five miles (and up a steep hill) from the village. Dent Station is on the beautiful Carlisle to Settle Railway and is the highest railway station in England.
