Hawkshead cottages

Hawkshead cottagesHawkshead is situated halfway between the lakes of Windermere and Coniston Water near the northern edge of Esthwaite Water. It lies amidst a landscape of undulating farmland, mixed woodlands and small tarns interspersed with traditional Lakeland farmhouses. The traffic free village’s narrow cobbled streets, squares, and courtyards are lined with whitewashed cottages giving it a sense of intimacy rarely found elsewhere in the Lake District. The tranquil lake of Esthwaite Water is fringed by lush meadows and overlooked by the wooded slopes of Grizedale and Claife Heights. At its southern end lie the twin villages of Far and Near Sawrey. Here is Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s house, where she wrote and illustrated several of her famous books.
