Ennerdale cottages

Ennerdale Water is the most westerly of the lakes, and the most remote, so it offers, even in high season, a place to escape. This secluded valley is only accessible on foot or by cycle, it is the only lake that does not have a road running alongside it, and remains one of the quietest and less explored parts of Lakeland. It is surrounded by the crags of Pillar, Steeple, Scoatfell, and Haycock on one side and High Stile and the Red Pike range on the other. The Ennerdale valley contains one of the largest forests in Cumbria. Vast tracts were planted with huge regimented blocks of spruce, which for many has detracted from the beauty of the area. Recently however the Wild Ennerdale project has been launched. The aim is to allow the area to evolve naturally, with minimal human intervention. After 2005 storms damaged many of the coniferous trees the project pressed ahead with its plans to re-wild the area, which include introducing ancient oak and birch woodland, allowing forestry tracks to revert to their vegetative state and the river to find its natural course. The gateway to Ennerdale is the small village of Ennerdale Bridge, which sits on the river Ehen just under a mile from the western end of the lake.
