Coniston cottages

Coniston cottagesConiston Water is one of the most imposing and beautiful of the English lakes lying under the gaze of Coniston Old Man. The village of Coniston lies at the head of Coniston Water nestling between the lake and the Coniston Fells. The village owes its early prosperity to copper mining and slate quarrying. Today it is a busy tourist destination, especially popular with fell walkers. Coniston Old Man rises dramatically behind the village. It is one of the most climbed of Lakeland fells and offers panoramic views of Coniston Water and Windermere and the surrounding fells. Arthur Ransome, was so enraptured by Coniston’s scenery that he used various nearby locations as settings in his famous children’s book, Swallows and Amazons. More recently, Coniston Water was the scene of an ill-fated attempt by Donald Campbell to break the water speed record in 1967. The remains of Bluebird K7 were reclaimed from the lake in 2001 and are currently being restored. Nearby is Tarn Hows, a popular beauty spot created by linking three smaller tarns. Located in the hills between Hawkshead and Coniston, the tarn is framed by views of the Langdale Pikes and the Helvellyn range and has a path around its shore.
