Caldbeck cottages

Calbeck cottages

Dominated by High Pike and the Northern Fells, Caldbeck is a traditional fell village situated on high land in a mostly treeless and wind-swept landscape. The ‘Back O’Skidda’ is the local name for the area, more remote and less known than any other in the Lake District. It boasts some outstanding scenery and is a great place for walkers who want to escape the busy southern fells. Skiddaw and Blencathra can be reached from the north along quieter footpaths than the usual approaches from the south. There are many other fine fells to explore such as High Pike and Carrock Fell. Half a mile from Caldbeck lies the limestone gorge and woods known as the Howk, where beautiful waterfalls and the ruins of a bobbin mill, which once had the largest waterwheel in the country, can be found.
