Appleby & the Eden Valley

Eden Valley

Appleby is one of the loveliest towns in the North of England. Once the county town of old Westmorland, it lies at the heart of the Eden Valley in a loop of the river and is overlooked by the Pennine fells. Appleby’s uncommonly wide main street, Boroughgate, has been described as one of the finest in England. It runs from the church uphill to the castle entrance and is lined with some interesting old buildings. Appleby is also a major stop on the Settle to Carlisle Railway. It is well worth taking a trip on the railway which passes through some of the finest scenery in the North of England, especially if heading south towards Settle. Lying with the Pennines to the east and the Lake District Fells to the west, the beautiful Eden Valley is a mix of lush green countryside, quiet towns and distinctive red sandstone villages. The River Eden has its source in the ruggedly striking Mallerstang Valley on the Cumbria/Yorkshire border. It flows northwards passing the market towns of Kirkby Stephen, Appleby and Penrith – the main town in the valley – before meandering its way to Carlisle and the Solway Firth. The walking in the area is superb; whether it is the demanding ascent of Cross Fell – the highest peak in the Pennines, the truly spectacular High Cup Nick; or more gentle walks in the vale, such as along the Eden in Appleby or Great Asby Scar, one of the most spectacular limestone pavements in Europe. Appleby hosts the famous Horse Fair in early June, transforming it from a sedate, elegant town into an animated and boisterous festival. Gypsies and travellers gather from all over the country to meet up with old friends. The 300-year-old event is an annual occasion where they celebrate their music, history and folklore and conduct business – particularly the buying and selling of horses. During the Fair, horses may be found everywhere – in the river, on its banks, along the roadsides or tethered outside hotels and shops.
