Ambleside lies at the heart of the Lake District with relatively easy access to most parts of the Lakes. Its scenic setting one mile north of the head of Lake Windermere, wide range of walks in the locality and all manner of water sports opportunities on the lake guarantees its popularity. The busy town has a good selection of places to eat and a wide range of specialist shops selling everything from outdoor equipment to local art and crafts. Ambleside’s most famous building is the 17th century Bridge House which perches over the narrow Stock Ghyll in the centre of town. This one room up and one room down property is now a National Trust centre. Nearby is Rydal Mount, home to William Wordsworth from 1813 until his death in 1850. It is little changed since that time and houses memorabilia of the poet. There are beautiful landscaped gardens and a walk on the property. The view over Rydal Water is said to have inspired Wordsworth’s poetry.
