Alston & the Northern Pennines

Northern Pennines

Alston, which sits at the junction of several trans-Pennine routes in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, claims to be the highest market town in England. From every direction, Alston is approached over a broad, heather-clad Pennine landscape, dubbed England’s last wilderness. This area, which gives birth to the north-east’s three great rivers, the Tees, the Wear and one half of the Tyne has a desolate splendour and the vast emptiness is inspiring. The A686 from Penrith in Cumbria to Corbridge in Northumberland, which passes through Alston, was chosen by the AA Magazine as one of their ‘Ten Great Drives’. Between Alston and Melmerby, the road climbs the Hartside Pass to a height of nearly 2000 feet, from where there are magnificent views across the Solway Firth to Scotland. Alston’s isolated position, in a narrow dale surrounded by fells and moors, miles away from any other major settlement, makes it particularly appealing for walkers. The upland scenery is quite breathtaking, with many fells rising to over 2000 feet. It is home to an industrial heritage of lead mines and quarries that will fill you with admiration for the people who worked here in this uncompromising landscape. Nenthead, the highest village in England, is home to the North Pennines Heritage Trust. The history of the area is detailed at the Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre where displays tell the story of the people, places, tools, lifestyle, and legacy of the mining industry. Whilst not as instantly appealing as the Lakeland fells, the North Pennines have a brooding quality and a bleakness that has great beauty.
