Alston cottages

Alston cottagesAlston, which sits at the junction of several trans-Pennine routes in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, claims to be the highest market town in England. It also probably has the steepest market square in the country, with cobble stones and a small market cross rising up the hillside. Around the square are many small traditional shops that serve the town, as well as some arts and crafts galleries and shops selling alternative gifts and paraphernalia. From every direction, Alston is approached over a broad, heather-clad Pennine landscape, dubbed England’s last wilderness. The village’s isolated position, in a narrow dale surrounded by fells and moors, miles away from any other major settlement, makes it particularly appealing for walkers. The A 686 from Penrith in Cumbria to Corbridge in Northumberland, which passes through Alston, was chosen by the AA Magazine as one of their ‘Ten Great Drives’. Between Alston and Melmerby, the road climbs the Hartside Pass to a height of nearly 2000 feet, from where there are magnificent views across the Solway Firth to Scotland.

Walking in the area

From your doorstep: The River South Tyne and Hewitts (fells over 2000 feet) including Grey Nag and Black Fell. A few miles away: Cross Fell (highest peak in the Pennines) and several Hewitts including The Dodd, Kilhope Law and the latest Hewitt – Thack Moor. Further afield: Upper Teesdale (Cauldron Snout, High Force), Upper Weardale and the rest of England’s ‘Last Wilderness’.
